Mechanical Engineer

The successful candidate will be responsible for mechanical design and solutions for the wood products, mining and material handling industries. In this senior engineering role the individual will be responsible for projects involving mechanical design, and flow/production analysis. This will include the sizing and selection of mechanical equipment such as drives, blowers, pumps, and the design of custom material handling equipment. Additional functions may include providing applications expertise to the sales team, liaising with internal engineering personnel and subcontractors, as well as involvement in site testing and commissioning. The preferred candidate will be a Mechanical engineer (P.Eng.) with several years of practical experience relating to the wood products or mining industry and a strong understanding of industrial plant processes and equipment. Experience overseeing projects which include process automation systems would be an asset. Knowledge of the regulatory codes for piping, mechanical and electrical equipment would also be beneficial.

Candidate's duties may include but will not be limited to the following:

  • Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, schematics, and computer-generated reports.
  • Confer with engineers and other personnel to provide technical information and effective design ideas.
  • Research and analyze customer design proposals, specifications, manuals, and other data to evaluate the feasibility, cost, and maintenance requirements of designs or applications.
  • Specify system components or direct modification of products to ensure conformance with engineering design and performance specifications.
  • Research, design, evaluate, and co-ordinate the installation, operation, and maintenance of mechanical products, equipment, systems and processes to meet requirements, applying knowledge of engineering principles.
  • Investigate equipment failures and difficulties to diagnose faulty operation, and to make recommendations to clients.
  • Assist designers in developing the mechanical design of products, using drafting tools or computer-assisted design/drafting equipment and software.
  • Provide feedback to design engineers on customer problems and needs.
  • Estimate costs and submit bids for engineering, construction, or extraction projects, and prepare contract documents.
  • Understand the industrial process to determine where and how application of equipment can be made.

Qualifications

  • Engineering degree in the relevant discipline
  • Eligible for registration as a professional engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of B.C.
  • A minimum of six years experience in the relevant engineering field.
  • Basic CAD skills
  • Good mechanical aptitude and knowledge
  • Works precisely and pays close attention to details
  • Ability to work with other engineers and technical support staff
  • Ability to analyze, interpret and evaluate various complex technical studies and data
  • Ability to define and develop criteria and cost estimates for plant modifications and/or other major projects
  • Excellent problem solving skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively with various internal and external sources for the purposes of gathering and relaying information, resolving issues of concern, etc.

Wages will be negotiable depending on experience.
